Cidery Grows Sweetly Into the Neighborhood
Minneapolis Cider Company is a prominent, locally owned and fast-growing craft cidery founded in 2015 by University of Minnesota students. The company produces hard apple cider onsite using Minnesota and Midwest apple varieties and operates a large taproom featuring craft ciders, cocktails, French crêpes, indoor pickleball courts and an event center.
We spoke with David O’Neill, Co-owner of Minneapolis Cider Company, about their growth at 9th Street Center.
Why 9th Street Center?
Being in the heart of the city was important to us. But we also had several needs, like high ceilings for our production facility and retail visibility with parking for guests. At the time, we were pursuing another nearby property, but about nine months into that project we discovered loose soil and foundation issues. We had to walk away from it entirely.
Through that process, we had been working with Joe (Hillcrest), and the opportunity at 9th Street Center just worked out for us. The space checked the boxes operationally, and it gave us the flexibility we needed to build out both production and a taproom experience. That was five years ago, and it’s been a great fit ever since.
What do you like about 9th Street Center?
It’s very accessible and quick off the highway, but slightly tucked away that gives us a destination feel and the ability to continue to grow. We originally leased about 15,000 square feet. Two to three years into our first lease, we added another 13,000 square feet across adjacent units. Today we’re just under 30,000 square feet across our main taproom, production space, pickleball courts, event center, and warehouse.
Being able to expand into neighboring spaces without relocating was huge. It allowed us to scale naturally as demand grew. We’ve expanded four times since opening, and we’re committed to being here long term.
What is your favorite neighborhood amenity?
The neighborhood itself has so much to offer. We’re something like 8 blocks from the iconic Stone Arch bridge. This area has residential, right on the edge of the northeast arts district and University campus, and close to so many great restaurants. We’re grateful to be where we are, and contribute to the vibrancy of our city. We’ve really enjoyed building relationships with other tenants and nearby businesses, which creates opportunities for collaboration and cross-promotion.
You may have to put us in your GPS the first time you visit, but once you know where we are It’s easy to find us, there’s ample parking and we’re close enough to downtown and the U to draw people in for events, pickleball leagues and taproom visits.
What do you like about working with Hillcrest?
I appreciate that Hillcrest is very hands-on in their management style. They run a tight ship and maintain high standards for the building. As a tenant, I actually prefer that. There’s a clear expectation around how the property is maintained, and that consistency is valuable. And I know I can pickup the phone and have a conversation.
What do you like most about your space?
At our core, we exist to bring people together. We’ve created a one-of-a-kind experience right in the heart of the city to do just that - featuring craft cider and cocktails, French crêpes, indoor pickleball courts and an event venue. Cider is an incredibly versatile beverage. We make traditional styles using local heritage apples as well as fun fruit forward innovations. We believe cider is a wonderful way to bring everyone to the table (non-alcoholic and apple juice for kids, too!). Join us at our space and disconnect from your everyday - and reconnect with friends and family.
